Dog ownership in the Bay Area is going through the roof. It seems that everybody and their sister are out walking their dogs these days but sadly most of the dogs in the Bay Area seem to have below-average looks. Why is that? Most people here rightly get their dogs from shelters, but as anybody who has been to a shelter recently can tell you, the available dogs for adoption are pretty damn ugly. One could safely say that the streets of the Bay Area are filled with very unattractive dogs. This has led one observant and enterprising plastic surgeon from Vietnam to open a plastic surgery clinic in Richmond with the simple goal of making ugly dogs more attractive. The Dragonfly Report asked Dr. Xau Xi to let our readers in on how he got started in doggy plastic surgery and the philosophy behind his business called Canine Contours.

I’ve always been a dog lover and a bit of a perfectionist. When I came to the Bay Area, I noticed so many people walking dogs with below average looks. I was a bit shocked. I mean the Bay Area is fairly well-to-do. Why then are the people so poorly dressed and their dogs so unsightly?
I discovered that most Bay Area dog owners got their pets from shelters and the good-looking ones got picked out really fast. That left just the ugly mutts for everybody else. When I say ugly, I’m not exaggerating. Some of these dogs I see people walking would be shot on the spot in Vietnam, Paris, or Rome for being public eyesores.
Don’t get me wrong. I know ugly dogs deserve to be loved too. I get it. But let’s be honest, do you really want to walk around with a dog so ugly that it would be summarily executed in the majority of countries in the world? I don’t think so.

That’s why I opened my plastic surgery clinic in Richmond a few years ago, and I am happy to say it’s been a huge success. I’ve done everything from ear cropping and tail docking to nose jobs and eyelid surgery. Give me your ugly dog that makes you look like a tasteless person for owning it, and when you get it back you’ll be the envy of the neighborhood. Here at Canine Contours we can turn even the ugliest mutt into a star.
Someone brought in a Shepard mix who had a really big underbite. We fixed that up, and now he’s a total ladykiller. And then there was this bulldog who had really droopy eyes. We gave him a lift, and now he looks like he’s ready to conquer the world. Another person came in with a Chihuahua whose eyes were so off-set that they affected the way she walked. She looks like a real princess now and I’ve heard she recently won a beauty contest.
My work has not been without its critics though. Some people have accused me of being a charlatan, and others have said that I’m just exploiting people’s vanity but I don’t care. I’m just happy to be able to help dogs find love and happiness and to help their owners not look like tasteless slobs. The streets of the Bay Area are starting to look more attractive now because there are more good-looking dogs out there, thanks to our clinic. Now, if only we could do something about the people.

Finally, if you have an ugly dog, and I know there’s a lot of you who still do, get that homely mutt to our Canine Contours Clinic on McDonald Ave in Richmond ASAP. Stop embarrassing yourself and the Bay Area!

Can you give my flat chested dog a boob job?
